The Problem

Overview:

Her Journey is a mobile app empowering women to travel safely and confidently. It addresses challenges like safety, cultural navigation, and reliable resources through curated guides, safety tools, and a supportive community

Purpose:
To provide a secure and empowering travel experience for solo female travellers.

The Problem:

❌ Safety concerns for solo female travelers.

❌ Difficulty navigating new cultures and finding reliable local resources.

❌ Lack of a supportive community to connect with other women travelers.

How might we provide a secure and empowering travel experience that helps women travel confidently, stay safe, and easily navigate new cultures?

The Design Thinking process consists of five key steps: Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test are essential for thorough product design and research.

What does the user feel, think, say, and do during her travels?"

Feels: Excitement, nervousness in new places

Thinks: "Am I safe? Do I know the customs here?"

Says: "I wish I had a guide or local friend."

Does: Avoids late-night travel, relies on online forums.

User Research

  • 80 Survey

  • 4 competitor apps

Research Process:

To gain a deep understanding of user needs and pain points, I conducted insightful interviews and analysed survey responses. I also examined competitor apps to uncover gaps in their safety features. Using these valuable insights, I developed user personas, empathy maps, and journey maps, which helped shape design decisions and ensured the final solution truly meets users’ goals and expectations.

User Research

"I love to travel, especially to rural, unfamiliar places, even though they often make me feel uncomfortable. It's this very discomfort that teaches me the most about the world and myself."

Users can register emergency contacts who will be alerted in case of an emergency.

The app allows the user can share their real-time location with their emergency contacts.

The app also provides information on nearby safe spaces like police stations, hospitals, and other public places where women can find help in case of an emergency.

Primary Interaction Zone

This area is where users naturally interact with their devices most frequently and comfortably. Placing the emergency SOS button here ensures it is easily accessible when needed, reinforcing its importance for quick action during emergencies.

Solution

Challenge

During the design process, I initially placed the emergency SOS button in the bottom-right corner of the screen, thinking it would be easily accessible. However, after further testing, I realised that its proximity to the screen edge meant users could accidentally trigger the emergency call. This posed a potential risk if users unknowingly activated it during everyday use.

To resolve this, I re-evaluated its placement and adjusted the button’s location to ensure it remained prominent yet less likely to be unintentionally pressed. I prioritised intuitive design by incorporating clear spacing and visual cues to highlight the feature’s importance, while also making sure it wouldn’t disrupt regular app interactions.

The Design Journey

Balancing Safety and Usability:

Designing for an audience with unique needs taught me the importance of creating features that are easily accessible yet non-intrusive, especially emergency functions like SOS.

Creative Problem-Solving:

This project challenged me to think critically about user behaviour and interaction, ensuring thoughtful solutions that prioritise safety

Positive User Feedback:

Overwhelmingly positive responses from users confirmed the value of thoughtful UX design, reinforcing the impact of the app.

The Road Ahead

The app is still in its early stages, but the feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

We are continuously learning from users and iterating on the design to enhance the experience.

Like any great product, it’s always evolving to meet real-world needs, and I look forward to refining and improving it further.

A Personal Connection

As a woman traveler, I deeply understand the need to feel safe and supported while exploring new places.

This wasn’t just about designing an app; it was about creating a solution that I would personally use and recommend to others.

Connecting my personal experiences to the design process made this journey incredibly meaningful and impactful.

What Did I Learn?

Key Insights & Learnings:

Simplicity Over Complexity: Testers felt overwhelmed by excessive features. We streamlined the interface to prioritise core needs—safety, community, and ease.

Authenticity is Key: Women craved real, trusted experiences. We centred the design around authentic stories, verified reviews, and women-led initiatives to build trust.

Cultural Sensitivity Matters: Recognising the diverse needs of female traveler's, we tailored features to address regional differences in safety concerns and travel behaviours.
